{"id":946,"date":"2015-03-21T14:14:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-21T19:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/?p=946"},"modified":"2024-07-14T05:41:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T10:41:04","slug":"drugging-missouri-foster-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/2015\/03\/21\/drugging-missouri-foster-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Drugging Missouri Foster Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: medium;\">Drugging Missouri Foster Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\u00a0<span style=\"color: black;\">In light of a <em>San Jose Mercury News<\/em> investigation &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/webspecial.mercurynews.com\/druggedkids\/?page=pt1\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">Drugging Our Kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&#8221; exposing the massive psychotropic drugging of children under California&#8217;s foster care system, which found nearly 25% of adolescents in California&#8217;s foster care system are prescribed mind-altering psychotropic drugs, lawmakers are now understanding the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cchrint.org\/2015\/03\/20\/finally-a-foster-care-bill-to-help-children-not-big-pharma\/\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">urgency of legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black;\"> to curb this abusive practice.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">More than 30 percent of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiamissourian.com\/a\/182580\/missouri-foster-children-are-given-higher-than-average-amounts-of-psychiatric-drugs\/\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">Missouri&#8217;s foster children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black;\"> take psychotropic drugs, even beating California, and most of the drugs are approved only for children with severe mental problems, according to <em>Columbia Missourian<\/em> news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Often neglected and abused, foster children are one of Missouri&#8217;s most vulnerable populations. But &#8220;experts&#8221; say the state cannot always give children the emotional support they need. Instead, their problems are dealt with another way \u2014 by prescribing harmful and addictive psychiatric drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Nationally, 18 percent of foster children are given psychotropic drugs. In Missouri, it&#8217;s nearly twice that amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The overprescription of psychoactive drugs to foster children is alarming. Well over 5,000 Missouri foster children are taking psychiatric drugs. At least 20 percent were taking an average of two or more psychiatric drugs. Missouri spent more than $81 million on psychiatric drugs for foster children in the last five years.
