{"id":475,"date":"2011-07-23T16:58:04","date_gmt":"2011-07-23T22:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/?p=475"},"modified":"2024-07-14T05:42:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T10:42:28","slug":"the-chantix-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/2011\/07\/23\/the-chantix-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chantix Fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/HEALTH\/07\/05\/chantix.smoking.suicide\/\">The Chantix  Fraud<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A study published July 4, 2011 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal  concluded that smokers who take Chantix, a smoking cessation drug, could  increase their risk of heart problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/early\/2011\/07\/04\/cmaj.110218\">The study  found <\/a>that there are &#8220;safety concerns about the potential for an increased  risk of serious adverse cardiovascular events associated with the use of  varenicline among tobacco users.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The heart problems are the latest in a growing list of concerns raised by  patient reports, lawsuits and studies since the drug&#8217;s approval in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>The drug could cause changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed  mood, suicidal thoughts or actions, according to its warning label. Chantix  carries a boxed warning &#8212; the U.S. Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s most  restrictive safety labeling &#8212; because of the risk of psychological events.<\/p>\n<p>Chantix has been banned by the Federal Aviation Administration for pilots and  air-traffic controllers because it may cause loss of consciousness and  blackouts. Truck and bus drivers are also not allowed to take the drug.<\/p>\n<p>Among all this is the apparently deliberate attempt to mislead the public  regarding the true nature of Pfizer&#8217;s Chantix. What are they not saying?<\/p>\n<p>Guess what?
