{"id":416,"date":"2011-03-06T15:26:58","date_gmt":"2011-03-06T21:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/?p=416"},"modified":"2024-07-14T05:42:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T10:42:31","slug":"antidepressants-often-used-for-no-valid-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/06\/antidepressants-often-used-for-no-valid-reason\/","title":{"rendered":"Antidepressants often used for no valid reason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research published\u00c2\u00a0January 25, 2011 in the <em>Journal of Clinical  Psychiatry<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/article.psychiatrist.com\/dao_1-login.asp?ID=10007266&amp;RSID=49719414846307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Antidepressant  Use in the Absence of Common Mental Disorders in the General Population&#8221;<\/a>)  concludes that &#8220;antidepressant use among individuals without psychiatric  diagnoses is common in the United States,&#8221; and these drugs\u00c2\u00a0are more likely to  have been prescribed by family doctors than by psychiatrists.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/02\/07\/us-depression-drugs-idUSTRE71605220110207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters  picked up the story<\/a> and said that &#8220;more than a quarter of people in the  United States who take antidepressants have never been diagnosed with any of the  conditions the drugs are typically used to treat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At $10 billion per year, the sale of antidepressants is a major contributor  to the high cost of health care insurance. As these drugs\u00c2\u00a0often have\u00c2\u00a0devastating\u00c2\u00a0side effects, they are calculated to create patients-for-life;  more and more health care is needed to combat these side effects, while the  original\u00c2\u00a0symptoms for which they may have been prescribed go undiagnosed and untreated.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times says (March 5, 2011)\u00c2\u00a0that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/06\/health\/policy\/06doctors.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Talk Doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t Pay, So Psychiatry Turns to Drug Therapy<\/a>.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Psychiatric hospitals that once offered patients months of talk therapy now discharge them within days  with only pills. &#8230; A psychiatrist can earn $150 for three 15-minute medication  visits compared with $90 for a 45-minute talk therapy session.&#8221; Yet, &#8220;Recent  studies suggest that talk therapy may be as good as or better than drugs in the  treatment of depression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure, people can have difficult problems in their lives, and at times they can be mentally unstable, subject to unreasonable depression, anxiety or panic.  Mental health care is therefore both valid and necessary. However, the emphasis  must be on <a title=\"Alternatives\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/alternatives.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workable mental  healing methods<\/a> that improve and strengthen individuals and thereby society by restoring people to personal strength, ability, competence, confidence,  stability, responsibility and spiritual well-being.
