{"id":3163,"date":"2024-05-20T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/?p=3163"},"modified":"2024-07-14T05:38:08","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T10:38:08","slug":"cchr-exhibit-exposes-psychiatric-human-rights-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/2024\/05\/20\/cchr-exhibit-exposes-psychiatric-human-rights-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"CCHR Exhibit Exposes Psychiatric Human Rights Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><em>Notable New York City activists spoke at opening of Citizens Commission on Human Rights\u2019 exhibit exposing sordid history of harmful psychiatric practices still in use today.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cchrnational.org\/author\/penric\/\">CCHR National Affairs Office<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an international mental health industry watchdog, held the Grand Opening of its traveling exhibit, entitled \u201cPsychiatry: An Industry of Death.\u201d The exhibit brings to light the history to the present day of the harm and human rights abuses of coercive psychiatric practices, including nonconsensual electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).&nbsp; Forced mental health practices violate international human rights standards but are still endorsed in the U.S. by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).&nbsp; CCHR advocates for state and federal laws eliminating coercive practices and banning ECT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event\u2019s keynote speaker, CCHR International spokesperson and founder of the CCHR Task Force Against Racism and Modern-Day Eugenics,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=efR1hip0KXk\">Rev. Fred Shaw<\/a>, spoke about the damage people can experience from psychiatric drugs and ECT and stressed the importance of patients getting the risks fully disclosed to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA trap wouldn\u2019t be a trap if you could see it coming,\u201d he said. \u201cThis exhibit brings the truth about psychiatric drugs and electroshock.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marion \u201cTiny\u201d Frampton, a former gang member in The Black Spades (TBS) and now Harlem community activist and founder of TBS New Directions, a youth mentoring program offering alternatives to youth gang involvement, spoke passionately about the damage he has witnessed from psychiatric drugs and ECT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a former gang member in the \u201870s,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cMost of my comrades were placed in mental institutions and were given all kinds of drugs and were even given shock therapy (ECT). &nbsp;For years I watched a lot of my comrades leave prison and be forced to take these medications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of my comrades who are alive today are still on medication [and] are homeless,\u201d he continued.&nbsp; \u201cThe medication has been in their system so long, they can\u2019t get off it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Harlem Globetrotter and now international goodwill ambassador Bobby \u201cZorro\u201d Hunter saw firsthand the adverse effects of psychiatric drugs on teens when he taught at a high school for pregnant girls.&nbsp;
