{"id":287,"date":"2010-06-11T21:21:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-12T03:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/?p=287"},"modified":"2024-07-14T05:43:09","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T10:43:09","slug":"the-costs-of-medicalization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cchrstl.org\/wordpress\/2010\/06\/11\/the-costs-of-medicalization\/","title":{"rendered":"The Costs of Medicalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Medicalization is the process by which non\u00e2\u20ac\u201cmedical problems, such as normal  life events, become defined and treated as medical problems, usually as  illnesses or disorders.<\/p>\n<p>For some time there has been growing concern that the medicalization of  behavior is a principal driver of <a href=\"http:\/\/cchrstl.org\/parity.shtml\">increased health care costs <\/a>in  the mental health care industry. The <a href=\"http:\/\/psychrights.org\/articles\/SSRIs.pdf\">medicalization of  unhappiness<\/a>, for example, is a driver for the prescription of <a href=\"http:\/\/cchrstl.org\/sideeffects.shtml\">harmful antidepressant  drugs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Conrad, a sociologist at Brandeis University, and his team have  published a recent paper in which they estimate the costs of medicalization [&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science?_ob=ArticleURL&amp;_udi=B6VBF-4YK2F7H-6&amp;_user=10&amp;_coverDate=06%2F30%2F2010&amp;_rdoc=1&amp;_fmt=high&amp;_orig=search&amp;_sort=d&amp;_docanchor=&amp;view=c&amp;_searchStrId=1352509630&amp;_rerunOrigin=google&amp;_acct=C000050221&amp;_version=1&amp;_urlVersion=0&amp;_userid=10&amp;md5=4128882f72b3b21ffe4896f2d0653cc6\">Estimating  the costs of medicalization<\/a>&#8221; <em>Social Science &amp; Medicine<\/em>, Volume  70, Issue 12, June 2010, Pages 1943-1947].<\/p>\n<p>The paper estimates direct costs associated with twelve medicalized  conditions (including ADHD, sadness, anxiety and behavioral disorders) in the  U.S. at approximately $77 billion in 2005, which was 3.9% of the total domestic  expenditures on health care.
